What are veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain placed on the front of your natural teeth to brighten and straighten your smile. They can correct chipped or crooked teeth instantly, without the pain and time of more invasive treatments.

Veneers are custom-designed for every patient. Your dentist at Sunrise Dental works with you to choose the color, size, and shape of your porcelain veneers to give you the natural look you desire. Veneers are a permanent cosmetic treatment, and each veneer is fitted and bonded to your tooth. Once you have veneers, you’ll care for them in the same way you would care for your other teeth: brushing and flossing daily at home, and coming in to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Are veneers right for me?

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dental procedure that addresses a range of tooth issues. Typically, veneers are a good option for patients with overall good health and strong teeth,  want to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile.

Veneers can fix cosmetic imperfections such as:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Discoloration
  • Short, gummy teeth
  • Small teeth
  • Irregularly-shaped teeth

You can get a veneer on just one tooth or on several teeth for a more complete, consistent look. Many patients get veneers for the top eight front teeth (the teeth that tend to show when you smile). Porcelain veneers are easy to care for and don’t require any special maintenance once you have them.

How are veneers applied?

Before you get veneers, you’ll have a consultation at Sunrise Dental to go over what you hope to achieve with your new smile.

Your dentist prepares the surface of your teeth by cleaning them. They remove a small amount of enamel and apply a special adhesive to permanently bond your veneers. Most patients don’t require local anesthesia, but it’s available to keep you comfortable if you need it.

Once you’re ready to get started, your dentist first anesthetizes the areas to be worked on, and cleans the surface of your teeth by polishing them. They then prepare the teeth to the required dimensions by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the future veneers. An impression of your teeth and a registration of your bite will be taken. You will leave the appointment with temporary veneers to wear while your permanent veneers are being fabricated by the lab.
